Glitter Up!
At the center of the Glitter Up! Room, barricades designed to control and contain crowds are consumed by a heap of glitter—its excess, its persistence, its refusal to disappear. The deformed protest barriers rise precariously from this shimmering pile. No longer serving as a rigid divider, the structure is destabilized by the material’s unruly spread. Screens of varying sizes are fastened onto the metal, dynamically displaying a sequence of works to resist static narratives
Teenage Glitter
Teenage Glitter is an immersive installation that restages the “teenage girl’s room” as both a sanctuary and a site for empowerment. A central triangular fragment deconstructs the teenage bedroom: on one side, its carpeted floor and textured wallpaper expose an intimate environment, while the raw materials on the other side evoke a sense of vulnerability. Familiar teenage objects fill the space, while soft pink drapes envelop the room. The installation blends nostalgia with a raw sensibility, offering a space that challenges traditional notions of femininity while offering both emotional comfort and a stage for subversion.
Hall of Glitter
The Hall of Glitter presents an archaeology of shimmering memories. Over a hundred beloved items are scattered across a landscape that evokes an archaeological dig. Elevated platforms at varying heights create a sense of discovery, while refractive lighting animates the glitter. Nestled among black stones, each unique object—unicorns, accessories, postcards—is an artifact embedded with personal stories.
Glitter Craft
With its stark white floors and tables, the Glitter Craft Room contrasts the muted minimalism of museum spaces with the vibrant, hands-on creativity typically found in a DIY studio. Framed like artwork, large pegboard panels—DIY workshop staples—line the walls to showcase works by five glitter artists. Two additional blank panels invite visitors to contribute their own glitter works, turning the space into a participatory environment where the boundaries between art, craft, and gallery are blurred.
Sparkle and Shine
The Sparkle and Shine Room reimagines performance through its deconstructed material traces. At the center, layered circular podiums sheened in a metallic veneer evoke shifting sequins. Forming a sculptural landscape for costumes and wigs, this island showcases artifacts of transformation and identity.
Museum für Kunst & Gewerbe Hamburg is the first museum in the world to dedicate an exhibition to glitter. Our exhibition design treats glitter not just as material but as a spatial condition—one that refracts and resists containment. Works traditionally confined to walls form thematic islands, inviting movement through heterogenous landscapes of shimmer. Each room presents a distinct material language, constructing immersive environments that explore glitter’s multifaceted and contradictory nature—a material that is ephemeral yet enduring, seductive yet disruptive, personal yet political.
